The 21st Public Science Day was taken place on Saturday, May 17th, 2025 at the State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric Science and Frozen Soil Engineering, Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources (NIEER), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Lanzhou, China. This event, themed “Science-Inspired Questions, Future-Oriented Journeys”, attracted over 1,300 participants from more than 30 organizations at Lanzhou, including students from kindergarten, primary school, middle school, and high school, university graduate students , as well as individual visitors.
This event featured a range of interactive exhibits and hands-on activities focused on permafrost and glacier dynamics in a changing climate. Researchers also introduced the impact of glacier melt and permafrost thaw on the hydrology, ecology, infrastructure, and communities in cold regions. Furthermore, they also presented the mitigation techniques creatively designed to cool the embankment subgrades and reduce the temperature of permafrost, particularly as applied in the Qinghai–Xizang Railway project. In addition, the event showcased the laboratory’s innovative work in science education, highlighting interactive teaching tools, youth outreach programs, and public science initiatives. Visitors were invited to explore newly launched exhibits and educational programs designed to promote broader public understanding and participation in cryosphere and frozen soil engineering.
