Gonçalo Vieira participated at the Open Science Conference of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research in Pucón, Chile, from 19 to 23 August 2024. This was the first in-person SCAR conference after COVID-19 and counted with over 1,300 participants. The International Permafrost Association took the chance to meet with the SCAR President Yeadong Kim in order to revisit the existing MoU between both organizations and discuss its renewal. SCAR is a key partner organization of the IPA, which together co-sponsor the Antarctic Permafrost and Soils (ANTPAS) SCAR Expert Group / IPA Standing Committee. The SCAR Open Science Conference hosted two sessions focusing on permafrost and soils in the Antarctic and South America.
