ICOP2024: Call for Session Proposals

Deadline: 24 February 2023

In recent decades, the impacts of climate change and economic development have significantly changed permafrost environments around the world, resulting in a wealth of community initiatives, research projects and unparalleled engineering designs. The ICOP2024 program emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of permafrost science and engineering as well as local and Traditional Knowledge.

The Organizing Committee is now seeking session proposals that promote interactions among researchers, practitioners and stakeholders working to address the challenges of permafrost in a warming world. We encourage session proposals inspired by the main theme: Permafrost Thaw, Change, and Adaptation: Integrating Perspectives, including but not limited to:

Permafrost and climate change  –  Permafrost hydrology  –  Periglacial geomorphology  –  Modeling  –  Natural hazards  –  Risks on permafrost-affected slopes  –  Foundation engineering and infrastructure on permafrost  –  Linear infrastructure on changing permafrost  –  Fire and permafrost dynamics  –  Socioeconomic and cultural dynamics  –  Coastal Permafrost  –  Permafrost and planetary health  –  Carbon cycling and climate feedbacks  –  Education and outreach  –  Alpine permafrost  –  Circumpolar permafrost  –  Permafrost in arid environments  –  Permafrost paleoenvironments  –  Permafrost agriculture  –  In-situ and remote observation techniques and programs  –  Rock glacier kinematics  –  Forest/ice/snow cover on permafrost  –  Planetary permafrost  –  Permafrost biogeochemistry  –  Permafrost microbiology  –  Permafrost and ecosystems changes  –  Biodiversity in permafrost landscapes

Session Conveners

Session conveners will be responsible for soliciting and selecting papers and abstracts, suggesting peer reviewers, and supporting oral and poster presentations. The Organizing Committee values equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of ICOP2024, so session proposals are welcome from two to three co-conveners representing broad perspectives.  One session co-convener MUST be within five years of completing their degree or diploma (early career) or associated with the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN).  Session co-conveners should also represent different institutions and/or countries. The International Scientific and National Organizing Committees will evaluate the session proposals based on the potential to attract participants and thematic overlap.

On behalf of the ICOP2024 National Organizing Committee, we look forward to receiving your session proposals and seeing you in Whitehorse in June 2024
