The awards were given in 6 different categories for oral and poster presentations presented during the TICOP conference in June 2012. A jury of more than 10 senior scientists were in charge with the judging, evaluating and ranking of the over 150 contributions. The entire process was lead by Anne Morgenstern from the Alfred-Wegener Institute, supported by Inga May (IPA) as well as Kenneth Hinkel (University of Cincinnati) and Fritz Nelson (chair of the IPA Awards and Nominations Committee).
The awardees were announced during the closing ceremony and received a certificate as well as a price.
In the categories of the oral presentations the
- The 2012 IPA Troy L Pewe award for outstanding international oral science presentation went to Anna Liljedahl for her presentation entitled ‘ Ice-Wedge Polygon Type Controls Low-Gradient Watershed-Scale Hydrology
- The 2012 IPA Pavel I. Melnikov award for outstanding international oral engineering presentation went to Julie Lepage (Quebec, Canada) for her talk about “Thermal performance of the permafrost protection techniques at Beaver Creek Experimental Road Site, Yukon, Canada.”
- The PYRN award for outstanding national oral science presentation went to Aleksander Pastukhov, Institute of Biology at the Komi Science Center in Syktyvkar for the presentation entitled “The spatial distribution of SOC in the forest tundra of the European North-East.”
- The PYRN award for outstanding national oral engineering presentation went to Maria Cherbunina, Faculty of Geology at the Lomonossow Moscow State Univ for her presentation about “Method of choosing the optimal location for the oil piopeline route using engineering-geocryological cost maps.”
In the categories of the poster presentations the
- PYRN-IPA award for outstanding science poster presentation went to Corina Doerfer from the Geographical Institute at the University of Tubingen, Germany for her poster about “SOC pools and stocks in permafrost-affected soils on the Tibetan Plateau.”
- PYRN-IPA award for outstanding engineering poster presentation was awarded to Samuel Weber from the Geography Department at the University of Zurich, Switzerland for “Design of a measurement assembly to study in-situ rock damage driven by freezing.”
