W 3-Professorship for Permafrost in the Earth System
The position opens in May 2015.
The candidate will succeed Prof. Dr. Hans-Wolfgang Hubberten, current Head of AWI Research Unit Potsdam and former IPA President (2008-2012).
The University of Potsdam and the AWI are searching for candidates bringing outstanding academic qualifications in the field of permafrost landscape dynamics within the context of past, present and future climate changes. The position requires methodological expertise in the area of generating long-term data series and/or the analysis of spatial environmental information. The successful candidate will use his/her own expertise to improve our understanding of long-term perma-frost dynamics, especially in the Arctic, and their feedback to climate and ecosystem. This work is carried out in cooperation with the modeling sections at AWI.
The professorship is part of the Potsdam Research Unit of the Department of Geosciences of the AWI. The position includes a teaching load of two hours per week at the University of Potsdam in the bachelor’s and master’s programs of the Geosciences program. Successful candidates are expected to participate up to several months in expeditions to Arctic regions, with an emphasis on the Siberian Arctic. A demonstrated commitment to teaching and the ability to hold lectures in German and English are required.
Specific prerequisites for this position include a completed university degree in science with a geoscience focus, an excellent dissertation in a relevant field and additional scientific ac-tivity that is outstanding in its field at an international level. Experience in leading expedi-tions, in leadership position(s), in successful procurement of external funding and in teach-ing are additionally required.
Prerequisites for the application are a doctoral degree and a record of research equivalent to the German “Habilitation”. Scientific qualifications achieved in the private sector, outside Germany, or as junior professor will also be considered (§ 41 Brandenburgisches Hochschulgesetz).
